Ozempic®

Ozempic is an injectable medication containing semaglutide, which belongs to a class of drugs called GLP-1 receptor agonists. It’s mainly used to manage blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. Semaglutide mimics the action of a hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which helps regulate the release of insulin when you eat. This helps to control your blood sugar levels, and is shown to be effective at supporting weight loss alongside lifestyle changes.

Individual results with Ozempic (semaglutide) can vary from person to person. In clinical trials, for people with type 2 diabetes, people using Ozempic achieved weight loss ranging from around 7% to more than 12% of their initial body weight, on average.

Your weight loss can be influenced by various factors, including individual responses to the medication, consistency with treatment, lifestyle changes, metabolic differences and overall health. Some people might experience more significant weight loss, while others may see more moderate changes.

Common side effects

Common side effects, experienced by more than 1 in 10 patients, can include gastrointestinal discomfort (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea), potential episodes of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), reactions at the injection site, and reduced appetite. These side effects often fade over time. Nausea, for instance, can be reduced by taking Ozempic with meals or before bedtime. Staying well hydrated and adjusting the timing of administration can help manage gastrointestinal symptoms. If these effects persist or worsen, we recommend consulting with your healthcare provider.

Uncommon and rare side effects

Uncommon side effects, affecting 1 in 100 people, may include hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), which can be addressed by adjusting the dosage or timing of meals.

Rare side effects (1 in 1,000) may include allergic responses or pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas). Be vigilant for persistent abdominal pain or other signs. Liver enzyme abnormalities are also rare, requiring regular monitoring. Any concerning symptoms should prompt immediate consultation with a healthcare professional.
